First hike of 2006

What a way to celebrate the new year. The soles of our feet were itching to get started with our outdoor activities, so we decided to do our favorite hike to the Chiling falls.

The rains that we had been facing in Kuala Lumpur had not changed the water levels around the Selangor Dam. The levels still look very low, with much of the terraced dam edge visible. Looked like none of the rains ever touched the hills surrounding the dam at all. With this sight, we pretty much knew that the possible strong currents that we were expecting at the stream crossings on the hike were not to be.

Nevertheless, even with the lack of water, the waterfalls look no less mesmerizing. The trail somewhat looked worn, and from what it looks like entry of vehicles at least to the first stream. Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against four wheel drive enthusiasts, but the damage they do to the trail is sometimes just too unforgiveable.

But what got me increasingly mad these days is that more and more people appreciate the outdoors these days but cannot be bothered to take care of it (See below). If you have enough resources and energy to carry your supplies in, you must have enough energy to carry your trash out! As long as we keep our impact of our resource use to a minimum, we guarantee the beauty of our nature for our generations to come.

Still as scenic and serene as ever.

But further in, there seems some efforts have been done to clean the trash along the trails. My kudos to the authorities or which ever organization who have done such a deed.

Signs have also been erected along the trails to now warn hikers and other users that fishing is now prohibited in the Chiling area (See below) by order of Department of Fisheries, State Government of Selangor and the Forestry Department. We suspect that this is done to preserve native fish stocks.
